Aegon's Conquest: Unraveling the Houses Defeated in the Crucible of Fire and Blood

In the annals of Westerosi history, few events are as pivotal and transformative as Aegon's Conquest. Aegon Targaryen, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, embarked on a conquest that would forever alter the political landscape of the Seven Kingdoms. As the flames of their dragons blazed across the skies, many noble houses found themselves swept up in the tide of history, their fates irrevocably changed by the might of House Targaryen.

The ironborn, known for their seafaring prowess and fierce independence, were among the first to feel the wrath of Aegon's dragons. House Hoare, rulers of the Iron Islands, stood defiant against the might of House Targaryen. However, their ironborn fleets were no match for the aerial superiority of Aegon's dragons. In a decisive battle known as the Burning of Harrenhal, Aegon unleashed his dragons upon the ancient seat of House Hoare, reducing Harrenhal to ashes and ending the rule of House Hoare over the Iron Islands.

A black raven flying in a blue sky, a gold longship on black, a dark green pine on white, a cluster of red grapes on gold, and a black longship on black are all shown in a clockwise manner on the Hoare banner, according to semi-canon sources. The longship for the Iron Islands, the green pine for Bear Island, the grape cluster for the Arbor, and the black raven for the maesters of Oldtown were the symbols of the far-off regions that had been ruled by the house; they were all restrained by the iron chains of the ironmen.

The Reach, renowned for its fertile lands and powerful lords, was ruled by House Gardener from their seat at Highgarden. King Mern IX Gardener, the last of his line, sought to oppose Aegon's advance into the southern realms. Gathering his forces, King Mern marched to face the Targaryen host in the Field of Fire. However, the might of Aegon's dragons proved insurmountable, and House Gardener was extinguished in the fiery carnage of the Field of Fire. Highgarden fell, and the Reach was brought under the dominion of House Targaryen.

When the Gardener kings rode off to fight, they donned crowns made of bronze thorns (eventually changed to iron) and crowns made of flowers and vines. The chivalric Order of the Green Hand was inspired by their blazon, which featured a green hand over a white field.

House Durrendon of the Stormlands

The mythology of King Durran Godsgrief, who established their realm during the Age of Heroes, is the source of the Storm Kings' lineage. The Storm Kings formerly controlled a large portion of Westeros' eastern region, which stretched from Cape Wrath to the Bay of Crabs. The Dornish Marches shielded their dominion from Dorne and the Kingdom of the Reach, and they subjugated the riverlands belonging to House Teague.

The Stormlands, a rugged and storm-battered region, were ruled by House Durrendon from their seat at Storm's End. Orys Baratheon, rumored to be a bastard half-brother of Aegon Targaryen, led the Targaryen forces against his own kin. In a fierce struggle for supremacy, House Durrendon was defeated, and Storm's End surrendered to the Targaryen forces. House Baratheon was raised to lordship over the Stormlands, cementing their allegiance to House Targaryen.

While House Stark of the North and House Arryn of the Vale did not face direct defeat at the hands of Aegon's dragons, they ultimately bent the knee and swore fealty to the Targaryen conquerors. Recognizing the futility of resistance against the might of the dragons, these ancient houses chose to submit rather than face the same fate as their defeated counterparts.

In the crucible of fire and blood that was Aegon's Conquest, the landscape of Westeros was forever altered. The defeated houses were swept aside, their power broken, and their lands redistributed among the loyal vassals of House Targaryen. Yet, even in defeat, the legacy of these houses endures, remembered in the songs and stories of Westerosi history.
